AI (Artificial Intelligence) and IA (Intelligent Automation) are two distinct concepts in the healthcare industry, both involving the use of technology to enhance decision-making, improve patient outcomes, and enhance efficiencies. The former is an effort to replicate the way we think (AI) and the latter to replicate the way we behave. While collectively, they aim to improve care delivery, decision-making and process, understanding the differences between them, as well as the risks involved, is crucial.
AI refers to the development of computer systems that can perform tasks that typically require human intelligence. AI is utilized to analyze data, identify patterns, and make predictions, recommendations or generate content based upon the data interpretation. Machine learning and deep learning techniques enable AI systems to continuously improve.
IA focuses on deploying process in the arena of repetitive, rules-based tasks and is designed to work alongside healthcare professionals as well as administrative tasks, providing real-time information, insights, and tools to make more informed decisions. It augments human expertise rather than replacing it and provides professionals with tools and assistance to improve their efficiency and accuracy.
Neither are without risks and challenges. Data integrity, security concerns, technology overreliance, accountability concerns, and regulatory challenges should all be taken into consideration when evaluating the benefit versus risk.
