Learning Fast, Thinking Global: My Journey into Marine Claims

Starting a career in insurance straight out of university was not the most conventional path, but it soon became clear it was exactly what I wanted. After studying Economics at Yale, I was looking for a career that combined analytical thinking with real-world impact, offering exposure to global markets, and industries. Marine insurance stood out because it sits at the center of international trade and reflects global developments as they occur. At the same time, my background in Psychology drew me to the human element of cargo claims, where problem solving is as much about communication and relationships as it's about technical expertise.

One of the things I enjoy most about my role is that every day looks different. I might be solving a complex loss scenario one moment and collaborating with clients across countries and various industries the next. The combination of a fast-paced job with global exposure and human interaction continues to make the work both engaging and rewarding.

I was fortunate to grow up in a well-travelled and internationally minded environment, which has had a lasting influence on how I approach my career. Being exposed to different cultures, perspectives, and ways of thinking taught me the importance of adaptability and curiosity from an early age. Those experiences, combined with studying alongside a diverse and ambitious group of peers, gave me the confidence to connect with people from all backgrounds and communicate effectively in different situations. Today, those qualities are central to how I build relationships and navigate the complexities of a global industry.

Communication is one of the most critical parts of my role. Claims can be highly technical, but ultimately, it's about helping people understand complex situations and make informed decisions. I focus on translating that complexity into clear and practical guidance while maintaining accuracy and transparency. I found that being open about what we know, what we're still working through, and how we're moving forward, is the key to building trust and long-term partnerships.

I joined W K Webster just before its integration with Gallagher Bassett, and in hindsight, the timing couldn't have been better. It gave me a front-row seat to how a global organisation evolves and integrates. It also afforded me the opportunity to see beyond my immediate role and understand how different parts of the business connect, from claims handling to broader strategy and operations.

When I reflect on what accelerated my growth the most, it wasn't a single moment but the level of trust I was given early on. I was encouraged to take on responsibilities that pushed me out of my comfort zone and challenged me to learn quickly. A career in marine claims means learning by doing — the most valuable lessons often come from your own experiences, making decisions and managing situations. My journey so far has given me confidence, but also a strong sense of responsibility to keep growing, learning, and contributing at a high level.

What motivates me most is the people I work with. Being surrounded by talented, supportive colleagues who are committed to delivering exceptional results creates a sense of momentum that inspires me to keep improving. Looking ahead, I want to continue building my expertise and contribute more broadly to the business. The industry is constantly evolving, and I am motivated not only by the opportunity to grow alongside it, but also by the chance to help shape what comes next.
