Dr Sandra Macdonald-Ames is a highly respected professional in the motor risk management sector, holding over 18 years of experience. As the Risk practice lead — Fleet at Gallagher Bassett, Sandra specialises in applying her expertise to revolutionise motor risk practices, ensuring client satisfaction through innovative and strategic solutions. Her three main strengths lie in her comprehensive understanding of fleet risk management, her ability to drive transformative strategies in driver training, and her dedication to cultivating industry partnerships, all of which are crucial in delivering superior client results.
Sandra began her impactful journey in the motor risk and training industry in 2007. From 2007 to 2021, she served as the owner of an advanced driver training consultancy, where she built her expertise in driver training, transport, and fleet management, setting a firm foundation for her career in risk consulting. Clients ranged from small fleets to large, respected UK brands including the largest fleet in the UK aiding in the initial roll out of electric vehicles. As a qualified associate digital insurer (ADI), it provided a unique opportunity to both train in vehicle — including a four-year opportunity within a police driver training unit — and working behind the scenes with management policy to improve risk.
Her transition to Gallagher Bassett in 2021 marked a slight change in direction in her career as Fleet Risk Consulting Manager and recently moving to the position of Risk practice lead — Fleet in March 2025, where she continues to lead with distinction.
Sandra brings a unique academic edge to her professional expertise, combining her extensive industry experience with her knowledge gained through achieving a PhD in driver behaviour. She is keen to pass this knowledge on with new industry professionals and was a sessional lecturer for two academic years at a UK university. Her academic engagement reflects her commitment to lifelong learning and sharing her knowledge, thereby enriching her practical and theoretical understanding of risk management in the motor industry.
